Sunscreen does not equal sunscreen
The right sunscreen provides a healthy and natural tan
A holiday tan is still considered an ideal of beauty. The sun puts us in a good mood, strengthens the immune system and activates metabolism. From a dermatologist’s point of view, however, everything suggests exercising caution in dealing with sunlight, but with the correct sunscreen and the correct amount of sunscreen you can maintain a healthy and long-lasting tan.
What happens during solar radiation?
The skin has a layer, where it protects and repairs itself. Small amounts UV-rays do no harm to the skin. The rays penetrate the skin and the body reacts by forming pigments. These then emit melanin (a brown coloring) that is stored in the top layers of the skin and tans the skin. The melanin binds parts of the dangerous UV-rays and the skin achieves its own sun protection factor (SPF). That means one can stay out in the sun three to four times longer than without tanned skin. The natural self-protection can become overwhelmed, forcing the UV-rays into the deeper layers of the skin, resulting in typical sunburn symptoms: red skin and swelling. Cell damaging free radicals evolve and the skin-aging advances. The risk of long-term cell damage grows with every sunburn.
How UV-Rays work
Sun and nice weather provide good moods and not only that, through the ultra-violet rays endorphins in the body are produced, blood flow, the immune system as well as metabolism is stimulated and vitamin D is created. The body requires vitamin D to produce calcium and stores it in the bones, for example. A healthy interaction with the sun has positive affects for the overall well-being and is an exceptionally effective tool for fighting depression!
UVB rays lead to the skin acquiring a longer lasting tan slowly. Being in the sun either too long or unprotected are the main causes of sun burns and long-term effects (i.e. skin cancer).
UVA rays strengthen the damaging affects of the UVB rays, enhancing the risk of skin cancer and are often responsible for sun allergies. These rays lead to the skin acquiring a tan quickly and for a short period, but they generate free radicals and therefore accelerate the aging process of the skin and the formation of wrinkles.
Enjoying the swimming pool naturally revolves around the right amount of sunscreen. To achieve a healthy tan, get your skin used to the sun slowly and choose the correct SPF for both UVA and UVB rays for your skin type. If possible avoid the intense midday sun between the hours of 12:00-15:00. Apply sunscreen liberally over your whole body and pay attention to the areas that are normally hidden from the sun. Re-apply sunscreen, especially after towelling off. Sunbathers in the shade of a sun umbrella or trees easily forget that sunlight from the ground or from the water’s surface are scattered and reflect, allowing the rays in the shade. This also applies on cloudy days, on the sand, with snow and water surfaces, as well as the glow from in-between houses.

Unique sunscreen from LIGNE ST BARTH based from Roucou seeds
LIGNE ST BARTH has developed an extraordinary sun care series from SPF 4 to SPF 50 for all skin types. The patented sunscreen products are based on the deep red Roucou seed, which even the Arawak Indians used back then to protect their skin against the sun, seawater and mosquitoes. Micro-fine zinc oxide is another natural ingredient used. These two components protect your skin naturally: zinc oxide offers extremely broad protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays, while conventionally, chemically produced sunscreen simply absorbs the rays. By contrast, zinc oxide works like a protective shield on the skin. It reflects the ultraviolet rays without preventing natural tanning. The deep red, choice Roucou extract is rich in pro-vitamin A, stimulating the skin’s production of melanin and increasing the skin’s self-protection.
The special features of the exclusive sunscreen products from LIGNE ST BARTH:
- Comprehensive UVB and infrared protection as well as protection against UVA rays (90% minimum) according to the Australian standard
